Juline Fisher

As a mother of three children in the San Lorenzo Unified School District, I have been a member of Hesperian’s Site Representative Council, involved in decision making for improvement plans, budgets, grants and character development.  The partnership between the school and community members has been a strong one that has led Hesperian to continued improvement.  As president of the PTA for two years, I spear-headed a $75,000 playground project that involved intensive fund-raising, and grant-writing for this community built playground.  These experiences have shown me the importance of the partnership between the community and schools. I also volunteer at local Channel 28, developing a kids’ show which teaches children all aspects of multimedia.  Through observation of the eLearning program, I was able to see the value of technology in our children’s future.  The world around our children is ever changing and we need to be aware of needed educational reform.   We know that parents are a child’s first teacher and need to continue in that role as our children move through school.  It is important for school board members to keep an open ear to the community and staff to make the best informed decisions possible for tomorrow’s adults of San Lorenzo.

Thank you again for the opportunity.

Travis Thoms

Hello!  I am Travis Thoms.  I am a four year resident of San Lorenzo.   I served two years on the San Lorenzo Business and Economic Development Committee; I served the first year as Chairman.  I am a chemist and material scientist, and I have had experience tutoring and teaching chemistry throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies.

It became very obvious during those times that those students who had a strong background in mathematics and English tended to perform better in chemistry class than those who did not.  I am fairly certain that this holds true for any topic, major, or course of discipline that our children wish to study.

In this day of pervasive “functional illiteracy”, we need to focus on the fundamentals of reading, writing, and arithmetic, in order to allow our kids to excel in whatever they choose to do in life.  Upon those foundation skills, we can then teach them the knowledge of history, science, art, and music that is needed to be a well-educated, well-rounded human being.
